The Covenant Health's Continuing Medical Education (CME) Department is committed to providing a wide range of CME activities and programs with a quality driven focus that will assist healthcare professionals to achieve the knowledge, competence, and skills necessary to promote and deliver optimal healthcare to patients of West Texas.

Continuing Medical Education Reminder
(for Texas Physicians)

As a prerequisite to the annual registration of a physician's license, 24 hours of continuing medical education are required to be completed in the following categories:

Formal Hours (at least 12)

Category 1 or 1A designated for AMA/PRA Category 1 credit by a CME sponsor accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education or a state medical society recognized by the Committee for Review and Recognition of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education; approved for prescribed credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians; designated for AOA Category 1-A credit required for osteopathic physicians by an accredited CME sponsor approved by the American Osteopathic Association; or approved by the Texas Medical Association based on standards established by the AMA for its Physician's Recognition Award. At least one formal hour must involve medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

Informal Hours

The remaining 12 hours may be informal self-study, hospital lectures or grand rounds.

The following activities are INELIGIBLE for AMA PRA Credit

  • Clinical Experience
  • Charity or mission work
  • Mentoring
  • Surveying
  • Serving on a committee, council, HOD, etc.
  • Passing Examinations
