(LUBBOCK) – Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association. People with diabetes can learn how to manage their diet at Covenant Health’s October diabetes support group meeting.
The group will meet on Monday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Knipling Education Conference Center, located on 21st Street and Louisville Avenue.
This month’s speaker will be Jennifer Gorman, M.S., R.D., L.D., outpatient dietitian for Covenant LifeStyle Centre. She will discuss how carbohydrate counting can help anyone with diabetes control their blood sugar (glucose) levels allowing them to feel better and have more energy.
The balance between insulin used and the carbs you eat determines what your blood glucose level will be after eating. Gorman will also share how carb counting can help you plan your meals.
This is an individualized process and therefore carb grams are not the same for every person. People who want to eat a more balanced diet and lose or manage weight should also consider carb counting.
Following the presentation, the group is encouraged to take part in a roundtable discussion regarding any diabetes-related topic. This event is free and open to the community. Covenant urges community members to come learn and understand more about diabetes.
