Diet is a key factor for people fighting diabetes. Jennifer Scaramuzzo, M.S., R.D., L.D., outpatient dietitian for Covenant LifeStyle Centre, will discuss “Creating a Meal Plan” at the May diabetes support group meeting sponsored by Covenant Health.
The monthly support group dedicated to people fighting diabetes will meet on Monday, May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Knipling Education Conference Center, located on 21st Street and Louisville Avenue.
During the meeting, Scaramuzzo will share information on basic carbohydrate counting, good carbohydrates versus bad carbohydrates as well as which foods tend to have the most carbohydrates. Scaramuzzo will also provide tips for grocery shopping and how to prepare healthier meals. According to Scaramuzzo, there is no such thing as the “diabetes diet.”
“If you are diabetic, the total amount of carbohydrates consumed each day must be monitored carefully,” Scaramuzzo said. “Carbohydrates have the greatest influence on blood sugar levels. However, it is important for people with diabetes to also monitor total fat consumption and protein intake, too.”
To keep blood sugar levels in check, it is important for diabetics to make healthy food choices, exercise regularly and take the medications prescribed by their physician.
Following the presentation, the group is encouraged to take part in a roundtable discussion regarding any diabetes-related topic. This event is free and open to the community. Covenant urges community members to come learn more about understanding diabetes.
