Covenant Health System Rehab Centers to Host Free Community Screening

(LUBBOCK) - Covenant Health is the first and only health care provider in the region to offer the H200, a device designed to help patients affected by central nervous system injuries move their hands.

Patients affected by central nervous system injuries can get fitted for this new technology at a free community screening put on by the Covenant Rehabilitation Centers. The screening will take place Tuesday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Covenant Neuroscience Institute, located at 3601 22nd St., Suite 301.

Covenant Rehabilitation Centers now offers two new devices, the L300 and H200, for patients who are suffering from upper- or lower-extremity paralysis caused by a central nervous system injury.

The L300 is a wireless device that sends electrodes through the leg to prevent patients from experiencing foot drop when they walk. Foot drop is a result of when the toes do not pull up as a patient picks up their foot, and as a result, they either drag their foot or move their leg from their hip to avoid dragging their foot.

At the screening, patients will be fitted for a device that is worn on the calf area of the leg as well as sensors that are placed in the patient’s shoes. The L300 senses every step the patient takes and sends electrodes to the foot to help it move. The device has the ability to adjust to different types of terrains so the patient can walk uphill, downhill and on uneven ground easier.

The H200 is very similar to the L300 in the way that it sends electrodes through the body to assist in every day movements. However, the H200 is designed specifically to help patients move their hands. It allows them to open and close their hands and pick up and hold things. Unlike the L300, the H200 is not wireless, but can be adjusted to fit each patient’s individual needs.

The community screening is free of charge and anyone suffering from upper- or lower-paralysis caused by a nervous system injury is encouraged to come get fitted for a L300 or H200.

When patients arrive at the screening, the front desk staff will ask them a few questions to make sure the device is appropriate for the patient. For more information, please call 806.725.0999.
