Covenant Children’s Hosts “Kids’ Café” to Educate Patients, Families

11/10/2014

Healthy food choices and eating habits are integral to overall health.

A hospital can be a difficult environment for children. Many of Covenant Children's patients have long lengths of stay due to the complex nature of their diagnoses. The staff strives to infuse as much positive activity into their stay as possible, and one such activity is the Kids' Café at Covenant Children's. The café is operating 11a.m. -1 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 30) in the NICU waiting room on the 3rd floor of the Children's hospital.

The theme for the event is tailgate. Covenant Children's patients will help serve the food; they also are decorating footballs. The meal is $5 for employees and current inpatient families. It is free for patients and parents if they have a patient under the age of 12.

Chris Dougherty, CEO of Covenant Children's, and his wife Wendy started Kids' Café to help patients learn about healthier eating habits and work with the dietitians about better food choices.

Dougherty said they have a few goals in mind they aim to achieve with the event.

  • Teach children about healthy diet choices. (They work with our dieticians to plan the menu.)
  • Give insight to children about the food service process. (They get to learn preparation and serving.)
  • Create a fun family atmosphere for meals.

"We tried this out once and I spoke to a patient and family," Dougherty said. "They told me their son had been in the hospital for several days and had not eaten at all. They even tried to buy him food from the cafeteria, but he would not eat it. He did not want to come to the Kids' Café, but reluctantly did. He had a great time and ate! He told us we need to do this more frequently."
