If you or a loved one has diabetes, make a New Year’s resolution to attend a series of educational classes offered by Covenant Community Outreach. The four-week series is free for those who are uninsured or financially in need. The class will meet once a week for four weeks beginning on Thursday, Jan. 5. Other class dates for the series are Thursday, Jan. 12, Thursday, Jan. 19 and Thursday, Jan. 26. Each class is from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Covenant Counseling Center, located at 1302 Broadway. | November 1, 2011 | Covenant Health System Physicians Debunk Flu Shots Myths
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 115 influenza-associated deaths of people younger than 18, from September 2010 through August 2011. Of the 115 deaths, 88 percent had not received the flu shot. Influenza, the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by coming in contact with an influenza virus. Symptoms of the flu are similar to symptoms of a cold. It includes body aches, fever, chills, coughing, runny nose and headaches.

To be certified as a direct patient volunteer, 12 hours of training must be completed. Training will be Friday, April 29 from 6 – 10 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. All classes will be held at the Hospice of Lubbock Conference Room, 3702 21st Street (located at the northwest corner of 21st Street and Louisville in the Louisville Place Building).

In 2009, Covenant Health System saw 20 confirmed cases of shaken baby syndrome and it is estimated that there will be 20 to 25 confirmed cases in 2010.
