Dr. James Harrell is a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, and chief of staff at Covenant Women’s and Children’s. He is the chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, and attending staff for adult cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He specializes in the surgical care of complex congenital heart disease, with additional interests in noncardiac thoracic diseases, transplantation and cardiac assist (ECMO).
He has achieved the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Presently, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.
Dr. Harrell is board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Board of Surgery. He currently holds medical licenses in Texas and Arkansas. His memberships include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons (FACS), International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, American Heart Association, and Michael E. DeBakey International Surgical Society Board of Directors.
Dr. Harrell completed his general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His thoracic surgery residency and research fellowship were completed at Baylor College of Medicine, working with Dr. DeBakey. He received his fellowship training in pediatric cardiovascular surgery at the Harley Street Clinic and served as an honorary surgical registrar at the Hospital for Sick Children in London.
