Neuroradiology Services

The certified neuroradiologists at the Covenant NeuroScience Institute work to diagnose and treat a variety of neurological disorders.

In addition to the 64-slice CT scanner, which gives physicians a three-dimensional view of the brain, we use the following technology:

  • Tomography
  • Angiography
  • Magnetic resonance

Coil Embolization

One of the latest innovations found in the neuroradiology department is coil embolization or “coiling.” This procedure is a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery most commonly used to treat aneurysms and fistulas in the brain.

How does it work?

While the patient is under local or general anesthesia, the neuroradiologist inserts a catheter into the leg and threads it through the body to the location of the aneurysm. Once it’s positioned correctly, the physician uses the catheter to insert small coils into the aneurysm. The patient’s body then forms blood clots around the coils, blocking off the aneurysm and preventing it from growing or rupturing.

What are the benefits?

  • Minimally invasive—Because there is only a very small incision, there’s less chance of infection and a much shorter recovery time.
  • Lasting effect—More than 80 percent of coiling procedures result in permanent success.
  • Expanded feasibility—Aneurysms that would ordinarily be considered inoperable can be repaired using coiling.
