LUBBOCK, TX- Covenant Health along with Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital
of Lubbock are pleased to announce the newest addition to their rehabilitation
therapy center, the Lokomat® Pro.
The Lokomat is a specialized piece of robotic equipment designed to aid
patients who must relearn how to walk. This device will provide a unique
opportunity for those patients who have suffered from severely disabling
injuries and illnesses, such as stroke and spinal cord injury. This Lokomat
can treat both pediatric and adult patients and is the only robotic equipment
to treat both in west Texas.
“Robot-assisted therapy is at the intersection of cutting-edge technology
and clinical expertise,” stated Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital
CEO, Craig Bragg. “We are incredibly proud to be able to offer this
advanced equipment and therapeutic program for patients in our community.”
Developed by Hocoma, a global leader in the development and manufacturing
of robotic devices for movement therapy, the Lokomat has been deemed the
world’s leading robotic medical device for physiological gait training
for severely impaired patients. The Lokomat is an exoskeleton robot that
helps support patients while they walk on a treadmill platform.
Therapy robots, like Lokomat, are intelligent devices and are designed
to use sensors to closely monitor movement, providing valuable feedback
to both the therapist and patient. The Lokomat’s feedback will help
guide and maximize the effect of gait training, allowing the hospital’s
patients to be appropriately challenged in a safe and effective way. The
equipment even features various game-like exercise programs designed to
help motivate patients to achieve their rehabilitation goals.
The Lokomat system is an excellent complement to traditional therapy practices
and will serve to enhance the hospital’s rehabilitation program
for patients who must learn to walk again.
“Our organization is always looking for ways to use new technology
to increase the quality and outcomes of our patient care,” Covenant
Medical Center CEO Walt Cathey said. “Lokomat is one of these technologies
that can help a variety of patients regain some mobility and independence
after serious injury or illness. With the addition of Lokomat to Trustpoint, patients will be able to get
this world class treatment here at home.”
The Lokomat was purchased with funds raised by the Covenant Health Foundation.
Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital of Lubbock is a joint venture between
Covenant Health and Ernest Health.
