July 17, 2008

LUBBOCK – Covenant Health System announced today it will build a 15,000 square-foot emergency department and fast-track urgent care center for minor emergencies as phase two of the Covenant SouthWest Medical Park development at 98th Street and Slide Road. The new Covenant ED is set to open in late 2009 as a 14-bay, full-service emergency department, and will act as an extension of the department at Covenant Medical Center. Emergency services will include both adult and pediatric care, in addition to the fast-track urgent care center.

Jonathan Skelton, M.D., physician project manager, said the new medical complex shows Covenant Health System’s commitment to the people of southwest Lubbock and the surrounding area. “We want to provide the finest quality healthcare for our community,” said Dr. Skelton. “By extending our services to the southwest area of Lubbock, we can deliver more convenient care to the growing population.” Brett Esrock, chief operating officer for Covenant Health System, said the new medical facility will give the people of Lubbock and surrounding communities easier access to Covenant services. “People who live in southwest Lubbock and Wolfforth will be able to receive the same great Covenant care without having to travel as far,” said Esrock. “The new emergency room will also alleviate congestion at our current emergency room on 19th Street.” This additional emergency department will allow for more efficient and timely care from the medical staff because of the reduced congestion, which will give patients a better experience and quicker access to emergency care, said Esrock. “Covenant Health System is committed to grow with Lubbock and remain the premiere health care provider in the region,” he said. “The community will be impacted by increased access to health care,” said Scott Robins, M.D., chief medical officer for Covenant Health System. “The ED is an important piece in the SouthWest Medical Park, and we are pleased to be able to offer this service to our community.” Representatives from Covenant visited other top-rated emergency departments in the country to gain best practices and knowledge to build a state-of-the-art facility, he explained. “We want to provide only the best care to the community. Offering emergency care closer to home at the Covenant SouthWest Medical Park is just another way we are fulfilling this promise to our patients,” Dr. Robins said.
