LUBBOCK – Covenant Health System announced today the establishment of the Covenant Health System Endowed Chair in Simulation and Nursing Education in partnership with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing. The endowed chair will provide innovative educational experiences in order to prepare Covenant students and nurses to provide safe, quality patient care in a world of expanding knowledge and rapid change.

Covenant Health System President and CEO Melinda Clark, R.N., recognizes the need for collaboration and forward thinking to enhance nursing care.

“As the need to increase the nursing workforce becomes more critical across the country, we all must work together to use innovative strategies in teaching our nurses and nursing students,” Clark said. “Together, Covenant and TTUHSC have created an innovative new partnership that will change the course of traditional nursing instruction.”

The use of simulation to facilitate learning and to evaluate clinical competencies has grown rapidly throughout the world over the past decade, explained Sharon Decker, R.N., Ph. D., director of clinical simulations at TTUHSC School of Nursing.

“Research has demonstrated that simulation, as an educational strategy, facilitates the knowledge and clinical expertise needed to provide quality, improved patient care,” she said. “The Covenant Health System Endowed Chair in Simulation and Nursing Education will provide Covenant Health System, Covenant School of Nursing and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center a unique partnership for integrating simulation throughout the nursing curriculum and conducting research related to the use of simulation focused on improving patient outcomes.”

“We are so pleased to partner with TTUHSC School of Nursing to raise the bar for quality nursing instruction and ultimately improve patient care,” Clark said. “After all, everything we do is for our patients, and we feel that this partnership will truly make a difference.”
