The foot is an intricate structure containing 25 bones with 33 joints,
107 ligaments, 19 muscles and multiple tendons that hold the structure
together and allow it to move in a variety of ways. Women have about four
times as many foot problems as men; lifelong patterns of wearing high
heels often are the culprit.
According to The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the average
person will walk nearly 100,000 miles in a lifetime, between three to
four times the earth's circumference. With walking that many miles,
it makes sense that eight in 10 Americans have experienced foot problems.
Conditions that podiatrists treat include: fractures, sprains, bunions,
hammertoes, nail disorders, arthritis, heel pain and foot problems caused
