The foot is an intricate structure containing 25 bones with 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and multiple tendons that hold the structure together and allow it to move in a variety of ways. Women have about four times as many foot problems as men; lifelong patterns of wearing high heels often are the culprit.

According to The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the average person will walk nearly 100,000 miles in a lifetime, between three to four times the earth's circumference. With walking that many miles, it makes sense that eight in 10 Americans have experienced foot problems. Conditions that podiatrists treat include: fractures, sprains, bunions, hammertoes, nail disorders, arthritis, heel pain and foot problems caused by diabetes.
