Testing and Diagnostics

Your doctors use many diagnostic and prognostic tools to determine which therapies work best to treat your cancer. Taking into account factors specific to your case, like cancer type and the genetic or molecular profile of the tumor, this may include one or more of the following: 

  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Gene expression assay
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • HER2/Neu
  • Hormone receptor (HR) status
  • Mammography (2D, 3D)
  • Ultrasonography

Mammography Services

We have a team of expert technologists. They are licensed and certified in mammography by the state of Texas and the American Registry of Radiological Technologists. When you get a mammogram, a physician interprets all images at Lubbock Diagnostic Radiology. They follow strict qualification standards from the Mammography Quality Standards Act and the American College of Radiology.

About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of breast tissue. It is more common in women, but men can get breast cancer too.

Personalized Treatment for Breast Cancer

We offer a wide range of advanced treatment options for our breast cancer patients, from diagnosis to post-treatment support. But your care begins well before treatment. We start taking care of you as soon as you walk through our doors. Your multidisciplinary care team works with you to design an individualized care plan, which may include one or more of the following:

Systemic therapies travel through the bloodstream and affect cells in other body parts. They are used for patients whose cancer has spread to other areas of the body or if there’s a high risk of spread. Sophisticated genetic analysis allows us to target therapies to specific DNA mutations that cause cancer cells to develop and grow. Systemic therapies include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Clinical trials
  • Hormone therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Molecularly targeted therapy

Surgical therapies involve an operation or procedure to remove cancer from the body. Surgery may be the main treatment for some invasive cancers, but it’s only one part of the entire treatment plan. Surgical therapies include:

  • Advanced axillary surgery techniques
  • Aesthetic flat closure mastectomy
  • Axillary lymph node dissection
  • Excisional breast biopsy
  • Excisional breast biopsy using targeted localization techniques
  • Lumpectomy
  • Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction
  • Nipple-sparing mastectomy
  • Oncoplastic lumpectomy
  • Risk-reducing mastectomy
  • Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy
  • Skin-sparing mastectomy
  • Total mastectomy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation from a source like X-rays or photons to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors. It may be part of a treatment plan that also includes systemic therapies and/or surgery. Radiation is sometimes used to help ease a patient’s pain or discomfort. Radiation therapies include:

  • Active Breathing Coordinator™ (ABC)
  • Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI)
  • Hypofractionated whole breast radiation therapy
  • Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
  • Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT)

Additional therapies may also be part of your treatment plan.

You’ll be provided with cancer supportive therapies to prevent or relieve symptoms, and to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout the course of your treatment. These may include:

  • Lymphedema therapy

We are currently enrolling in a number of clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of various types of chemotherapy, surgery and hormonal therapies to treat early-stage as well as HER2-positive and HER2-negative breast cancers.

We are also a member of NRG Oncology, a federally funded cooperative research group. As a member of the Providence family, we partner with the Providence Research Network and the Providence Molecular Genomics Laboratory to continually improve our care for the best outcomes. We also participate in a tissue repository in partnership with Texas Tech University to help researchers learn more about cancer and its spread.
