Mobile Mammography

Covenant Health is the only facility with a mobile mammography unit in the region.

Since 1989, Covenant's mobile mammography has provided screening mammograms to rural areas. The program focuses on women age 40 and older and is housed under the Arrington Comprehensive Breast Center.

The mobile unit provides screening mammography services within a 120-mile radius of Lubbock, traveling to a different location each day. The mammography technologist is licensed and certified by the Texas Department of Health and the American Registry of Radiological Technologists. All mammograms are interpreted by physicians at Lubbock Diagnostic Radiology, board-certified radiologists. The mobile program is certified by the Food and Drug Administration, the Mammography Quality Standards Act and accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Residents of rural areas may encounter such barriers to service as:

  • lack of transportation
  • driving distance
  • health status
  • age or lack of financial resources

Nineteen counties in the South Plains region benefit from the mobile program by offering their residents access to screening mammography.

Financial assistance is available through a partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Lubbock area affiliate.

The mobile unit also participates in community health fairs, community events and screenings by promoting breast health awareness and providing patients with breast health educational materials. Rural health providers are notified of screening locations through a monthly calendar. Previous mammography patients of the mobile program are sent an annual reminder letter to schedule their mammogram. Exam results are sent to the referring physician, and a lay letter is sent to the patient. Lay letters for abnormal results are sent by certified mail to the patients.
