Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Covenant Health’s state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities include positron emission tomography, or PET. This important tool greatly enhances a physician’s ability to diagnose and manage a wide range of diseases.

PET detects changes in cellular function, leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses in cancer and many other diseases. It also guides the physician in choosing the most effective treatment approach and helps monitor patient progress.

To begin the procedure, patients are injected with a tracer. Then they lie on a comfortable table that moves through the ring-like PET scanner. The scan is painless and lasts anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes. The radiation level from PET is generally equivalent to those of an MRI or X-rays, and the tracers do not remain in the patients’ systems for very long.
