NeuroScience Institute

The Covenant NeuroScience Institute is proud to be the only facility in the region to offer patients neuro-stimulation. For many people with movement disorders and certain treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, neuro-stimulation, also called “deep brain stimulation” can provide relief from symptoms even when other methods have failed.

How Does It Work?

Neuro-stimulation works by sending electrical impulses to the part of the brain affected by the condition the patient is suffering from. The impulses are sent by a “brain pacemaker” implanted during a surgical procedure, which is connected to electrodes placed in targeted areas.

What Does the Surgery Involve?

Before beginning surgery, surgeons use an MRI or CT scan to pinpoint the exact targets for the electrodes. Then, the patient is mildly sedated while doctors implant the pacemaker and electrodes. After a short recuperation period—usually only a few days—patients meet with their doctor to turn the pacemaker on and begin working to find a therapeutic level of stimulation.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Neuro-stimulation can provide relief for patients who have not had success with other therapies
  • Neuro-stimulation has very few side effects
  • Neuro-stimulation is completely reversible
