The Women's Care Center at Covenant Children's Hospital

Covenant Hospital would like to partner in your baby’s healthcare by providing the following important information concerning immunizations. There are standard and recommended immunizations to protect you and your baby from vaccine preventable diseases.

Tdap (Whooping Cough Vaccine)

It is very important that women receive the Tdap Vaccine, whooping cough vaccine, in the third trimester of every pregnancy. The Tdap vaccine immunizes for Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. It is a highly contagious bacterial illness spread by coughing and sneezing. People sick with pertussis have severe coughing attacks that can last for months.

You will need the whooping cough vaccine during each of your pregnancies. The best time to get the shot is your 27 th through 36 th week of pregnancy . The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends this protocol and this recommendation is supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

You should get the whooping cough vaccine while pregnant, each pregnancy, to pass protection to your baby.

Discuss this very important recommendation with your physician.

Seasonal Influenza

Offered during the flu season, receiving an influenza vaccine each year is the single best way to protect mother’s health for the flu.

Please refer to the CDC’s website for additional information on immunizations at
