We had gone to church that morning. It was a beautiful afternoon...mid
70's, light breeze, sun shinning...the perfect time for a moments
rest after a long week..but that wasn't to be the plan. You see it
was two days just after our son's 14th birthday; and without my knowing,
my husband had bought him a new dirt bike for his birthday -something
he had always wanted. So to him, this Sunday was the perfect day to ride.
He knew what was expected of him. He was to stay off the main road, wear
his helmet, stay in control, and watch for unexpected obstacles...We just
didn't expect the obstacle to be a small gauge wire laying in the
middle of a dirt road. It was this wire that would change our peaceful
sunny day into our dreaded nightmare.
A few minutes into his ride, his front tire caught a 16 inch loose wire
that lodged itself around the spoke, jamming it into a complete stop,
and throwing him several feet. He did have his helment on...and he did
land in soft dirt...but it wasn't so fortunate for his right wrist.
It was stomach turning (at least for me)....badly broken.
Upon arriving to the Children's ED, we were quickly taken back to receive
care, and told he would have surgery as soon as the doctor arrived. When
the surgeon came in the room, he said "I will try to set it twice.
If it doesn't work, we'll do surgery". I was scared but relieved
he was there. In my nervousness I said to him "I trust you will do
your best" and he replied "By the grace of God, I will".
When you are watching your teenage son's eye's filled with tears
of fright and pain, and a surgeon comes in, joins his faith with my trembling
heart, it IS a sacred moment.
So this message is out of love and appreciation for Dr. Karl Pankratz.
We apprecaite his dedication to his field, his compassionate and excellent
care, and his willingness share his faith and talents with a shaken family
on a Sunday afternoon in August.
Thank you Dr. Pankratz
