"The staff members at Covenant were the most wonderful, caring people
I’ve ever met. They helped me make the best of a grueling experience—and
inspired me to pass on the hope they gave me to other people,"
- Jennifer B
When she was just 18, Jennifer Burns had a skiing accident that would change
the course of her life. After slipping on a patch of ice and crashing
into a tree, Jennifer suffered from a spinal cord injury that left her
completely paralyzed.
She was airlifted to Covenant Medical Center, where doctors told her she
had a less than five percent chance of ever moving—never mind walking—again.
However, she had youth and strength in her favor, so once she was stabilized,
they moved her into the acute care rehabilitation unit.
Over the next eight months, Jennifer worked diligently with her Covenant
therapist, Sean, and Dr. Wolcott. At first, progress was slow. "The
first time I moved my toe, I was ecstatic," Jennifer said.
But by the time classes began at Texas Tech eight months later, Jennifer
was ready for action. She’d made a complete recovery—and had
decided to change her major. Formerly a pre-law student, she switched
to pre-med instead.
"The staff members at Covenant were the most wonderful, caring people
I’ve ever met. They helped me make the best of a grueling experience—and
inspired me to pass on the hope they gave me to other people," Jennifer said.
